Are Sportsmen Worth Their Weight In Gold?

It is often that we read about the mega deals that are associated with superstar sportman. Are they really worth it according to all the hype?
For example, let's look at the recent world cup (football).
Many of their top stars flopped during this world event. Some of these guys are paid 200000 USD per game.....that's right....per game. That means that they can earn as high as 6-7 million USD per year. And that's just salary. If you include endorsements then we are talking another 5 - 20 million USD per year.

Even basketball has superstars in them. But if their team members are not up to the mark then the chances are the team will lose on the day. Irregardless whether they have players like Michael Jordan.

In the game of football (or soccer as they call it in the US) my reasoning is that no football player is worth that much. The reason is that it is a team event. The term 'team' means that the team has to play well together to be a force on the field. If some team members are not up to par on that day then the team performance will be handicapped no matter how good you are individually.

Only players participating in games like tennis and golf deserve to be rewarded with mega bucks because they excel themselves to become champions without relying on others.

Companies should relook at their promotional campaigns and really endorse only players deserving of their status and prominence.
